Our story
On 10 July 2024, Daan's sister Guusje was surfing at her home break. That's when another surfer lost control of his board, and ran in to Guusje, his board broke and the nose of the board penetrated through her skull.
That same night she had a brain surgery to save her life. Followed by months on the ICU, she was medically evacuated to Singapore for better medical care and there had the next surgeries.
It's a miracle she is still with us, and we cannot express our gratitude for that.
It made me think, in every other extreme sport helmets are the norm, yet not in surfing. That's when Mamuli-Surf was born.
The Founder
Daan van Rooijen is a surfer and young founder. After the accident, he tried the surf helmets on the market, but he didn't want to wear them. They felt uncomfortable and took away from the experience of surfing. So he decided to build his own.
With no background in product design, he learned as he went: sketching, 3D printing helmets, prototyping, and working with engineers and factories. Along the way, he shared every step online and built a community of 22,500 surfers who helped shape the helmet.
Because of that first experience, one rule has guided every decision:
"I will only launch a helmet I would actually wear myself."
The journey
2024: Guusje's accident. Mamuli-Surf is born.
2025: Sketches, 3D-printed prototypes and 30+ test sessions, developing, refining along-side the community and pro-surfers.
2026: €31,000 raised on Kickstarter, 22,500 surfers in the community, test session with Nazaré champion Clément Roseyro and now in mould production.
Early 2027: Official global launch.
